Background
An outcome of the mediated settlement between Staff
Association and CBE was that a Task Force was to be formed to
address outstanding issues that were not resolved in the collective
agreement. Many of the outstanding issues touch on the working
relationship between Staff Association members and their supervisors.
The Task Force will be comprised of both Staff Association and
Calgary Board of Education representatives, and is directed to
make recommendations to the Chief Superintendent of Schools by
December 15, 2008.
Jean Minifie, Staff Association Chairperson, Bill Flookes, Manager,
and Albert Herscovitch, Director met with Dr. Croskery, Chief
Superintendent, in the summer to discuss the makeup and a tentative
meeting schedule for the Task Force. Dr. Croskery has committed
to attending the first Task Force meeting to work members on the
mandate and anticipated outcomes of the Task Force. While the
Task Force was to have been convened by a mutually agreed upon
chairperson within a short time of reaching a settlement, the
final roster of the Task Force was not completed prior to summer
break. Jean has talked with Dr. Croskery since then, and we await
his decision regarding the CBE representatives assigned to the
Task Force.
In the meantime, the executive of the Staff Association Board
of Directors chose our representatives for the Task Force. They
are: Albert Herscovitch, Director; Cathy Evanochko, Vice-Chairperson;
Hilary Smith, KIT Liaison Chair; and Jenica Lemay, member. Additional
volunteers agreed to participate in a Task Force Advisory committee.
The Task Force Advisory will meet on a regular basis with the
four Staff Association Task Force reps to provide input and feedback
to help guide the work. The first meeting of the Task Force Advisory
was on Monday, September 8, 2008. We discussed the mandate of
the Advisory and reviewed events to date.
We look forward to beginning this vitally important work and
we will keep you updated regularly.
